
The Secret to Why Some Infrared Heaters Just… Die
Here’s a little industry secret: when an infrared towel rail quits on you, it’s rarely the heating element that gave up. Usually, the real culprit is the tiny spot where the lead wire connects to the quartz tube. It sounds like a small detail. But in our experience, that seal is exactly where the battle is won or lost. It’s the difference between a heater that lasts for a decade and one that shorts out in six months.
The struggle with heat
Think about what happens when you flip the switch. Everything gets hot. Then you turn it off, and it cools down. The problem is that metal and glass don’t react to heat the same way. They expand and shrink at different speeds. This creates a constant, invisible tug-of-war at the junction. Cheap heaters use basic glues that just can’t handle it. They dry out, they crack, and then the bad stuff happens. Moisture and oxygen sneak inside, the internal filaments start to rust, and the insulation fails. Once that happens? You’ve got a short circuit.
How we do it differently
A lot of factories just “pot” the connection—basically dumping some filler in there and calling it a day. We take a different route. We use high-temperature silicone and specialized resins that stay flexible even when they hit 250°C. Instead of fighting the tube, the seal moves with it. And before we even seal it, we use a precise crimping sequence. This locks the electrical contact in place mechanically. That way, if a wire gets tugged during installation, it isn’t going anywhere.
A quick heads-up on design
Now, there is a trade-off. Better sealing adds a bit more material to the end of the tube. Because of that, you have to be careful with your housing. If you cram a high-wattage unit into a tiny space with zero airflow, that seal can act like a heat sink and actually melt your outer plastic casing. It’s all about balance. To make sure we’ve got it right, we push our seals to 1.5x their rated voltage. It’s a bit of a stress test to make sure they can handle the messy reality of the real world.
