
Making Heat Safe for Little Eyes
When you’re designing infrared lamps for a bathroom—especially when there are babies involved—you can’t just worry about how hot the lamp gets. You have to think about the light itself. Standard short-wave lamps are aggressive. They put out a high-intensity light that can really stress out the retina if someone looks right at it. That’s a big problem when you’re dealing with an infant. So, we change how the light behaves. The trick is in the tuning. We use specific coatings and filament mixes to scrub out that harsh, blinding light. By pushing the output toward the long-wave side of things, we get warmth that actually sinks into the skin, but without that industrial glare. It keeps the light soft. This is huge because it stops a baby’s developing optic nerve from getting overwhelmed. As for the gear, we use a high-purity quartz envelope. Why? Because quartz can handle being turned on and off rapidly without cracking under the pressure. Inside, there’s a precision-wound tungsten filament. To keep things feeling gentle, we usually go with a frosted or coated glass finish. It turns a sharp, piercing point of light into a broad, cozy glow. But here’s the thing: it’s not a direct swap. You can’t just pop an eye-safe lamp into a socket and expect it to feel exactly like a standard one. Long-wave emitters don’t have that same immediate “punch” as short-wave lamps. You might find you need to move the lamp a bit closer or bump up the wattage to get the surface temperature where you want it. And a quick word of caution if you’re installing these in a steamy bathroom: make sure your housing is IP-rated. If moisture gets on that quartz tube, it creates hot spots. Those spots will eat through your filament way faster than they should. Keep your seals tight and your voltage steady, and the lamps will last.
