
Keeping Things Safe: Putting Infrared Heaters in the Bathroom
If you’re putting an infrared heater in a bathroom, you can’t just slap on a waterproof cover and call it a day. You’ve got high-wattage elements fighting a constant battle against steam and stray water droplets. Water loves to find a way to the ground, and in a wet zone, that’s a recipe for trouble. To actually keep things safe, we lean hard on the IP55 rating and a solid internal barrier.
What IP55 actually does for you
Basically, IP55 means the unit can handle dust and low-pressure water jets coming from any angle. But in a real bathroom, the biggest headache isn’t a splash—it’s condensation. Steam is sneaky. It migrates. That’s why we use sealed gaskets and moisture-resistant cable entries to keep that damp air out of the wiring. If water hits a live terminal, it creates a “tracking path,” which is just a fancy way of saying it creates a shortcut for electricity to go where it shouldn’t. We stop that by using heavy-duty insulating resins and tucking all the connection points away where they’re shielded.
Making sure the electricity stays put
Safety really comes down to one thing: making sure the electricity stays in the wires and doesn’t jump to the metal chassis. We use silicone-insulated leads because they don’t get brittle or crack when they’re heated and cooled over and over again. Now, the infrared lamp itself is quartz, which is great, but the end caps? Those are usually where things go wrong. To fix that, we use reinforced ceramic insulators at the contact points. It keeps the current in the filament and away from the housing.
The trade-offs
Here’s the thing: when you seal a heater up this tight, you lose a bit of airflow. A fully sealed IP55 box traps more heat inside than an open-frame model would. You’ll also want to double-check your circuit breakers to make sure they can handle the initial “inrush” of power when these lamps kick on. And please, for the love of everything,use a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter). The IP55 housing is your first line of defense to keep water out, but the GFCI is what saves your skin if a seal ever fails. It’s the safety net you can’t afford to skip.
