
How to pick the right wattage for your bathroom heater
Nobody likes stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing cold bathroom. It’s a shock to the system. That’s why we use infrared lamps—they don’t waste time trying to warm up all that damp air. Instead, they beam the heat straight at you. It’s instant. But here’s the thing: you can’t just grab the most powerful lamp on the shelf and call it a day.
Getting the power right
You’ve got to look at how much space you’re actually working with. If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room (anything under 4m²), a 400W to 600W lamp is usually plenty. You’ll feel the warmth immediately without feeling like you’re standing inside an oven. For those big master bathrooms (over 8m²), you’ll want to step up to 800W or 1200W. But be careful. Putting a 1200W beast in a tiny stall is a mistake. It becomes oppressive. You’ll find yourself clicking the power on and off every few minutes just to keep from overheating, which actually wears out the relay and kills the lamp faster.
Where to put it
Shortwave lamps are the way to go if you want heat now. The best bet is to mount them in the ceiling, right above where you’ll actually be standing. If you put them too far away, the heat just disappears into the walls before it ever reaches you. One quick heads-up on the electrical side: high-wattage lamps pull more current. Make sure your wiring can handle it so you don’t run into voltage drops. And if you’re putting a few of these on one circuit, double-check your breaker. You don’t want the lights going out right as you get warm.
Comfort vs. Raw Power
It’s tempting to go for one big, powerful lamp to save space, but that often creates “hot spots.” You’ll feel scorching heat in one spot and a chill two feet away. A better trick? Use two lower-power lamps and space them out. It spreads the warmth more evenly, making the whole room feel cozy rather than just “hot.” Just keep in mind that more power means the quartz glass gets much hotter. Make sure your mounting brackets are rated for the heat, otherwise, you might see some warping over time.
