
Making Bathroom Heaters Safe (and Actually Comfortable)
Most bathroom heat lamps use short-wave infrared. It’s great because it hits you instantly—no waiting around in a cold room. But there’s a catch. If you’re using these around kids or babies, those high-wattage quartz lamps can be way too bright. That harsh glare and the UV stuff aren’t exactly what you want in a family bathroom. Saving your eyes We can’t just dim the lights to fix this; we need the heat. So, instead, we mess with the light spectrum. We use special coatings or “doped” quartz glass to filter out those stabbing blue-light peaks and UV rays. This pushes the energy toward the long-wave side of things. The result? You still feel that deep, cozy warmth on your skin, but the light stays soft. Your eyes don’t feel strained, and you aren’t staring into a miniature sun while you’re brushing your teeth. The balancing act Designing these things is a bit of a tug-of-war. We use high-purity quartz for the bulbs so they don’t just pop the second you flick the switch. But we also have to be careful with the wattage. If we cram too much power into a tiny space to make it heat up faster, the fixture itself gets dangerously hot. We spend a lot of time balancing that power. We want the heat projecting downward, not soaking into the housing. Getting the heat where it belongs To make this work, you need a reflector that doesn’t warp or fade when things get hot. We go with gold-plated or high-polish aluminum. It bounces those IR rays exactly where they need to go—on you, not your ceiling. Now, here’s the honest truth: these filters do cut the thermal efficiency a tiny bit. A raw, uncoated tube is technically “hotter.” But we’re happy to trade a small percentage of that heat for a light that won’t hurt your eyes. It’s just the right way to do it for a home.
